On our way to Campeche we drove through some tropical swampland and stopped at the little town of Isla Aguada. The drive was nice and the RV park that we ended up in was ideal.
The RV park was on the beach, with a nice restaurant and good power. (Note! power in Mexico is sometimes on and sometimes off and often unusable because the voltage is too high.)
We all enjoyed a lay day here. Some took a tour of the town on rickshaws towed by motorcycles.
The drive from Isla Aguada to Campeche was very restful and beautiful. It was along the coast with the light blue waters of the Gulf on the left and a tropical forest/jungle on the right. It was Sunday morning and no traffic so we just cruised along at 50 and enjoyed.
We are staying at Club Nautica where they have a very high end campground like you would find in the states. The facilities are excellent and they even have tennis courts.
The city was founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadores as San Francisco de Campeche atop the pre-existing Maya city of Canpech or Kimpech. The Pre-Columbian city was described as having 3,000 houses and various monuments, of which little trace remains.
The city retains many sections of the Spanish city walls and fortifications which protected the city from pirates and buccaneers. The Spaniards lived inside the walled city, while the natives lived in the surrounding barrios of San Francisco, Guadalupe and San Román. These barrios still retain their original churches and have a cannon at each entrance.
